Landlord Lied About Back Rent For Pay Or Quit Notice
location: Virginia
I was given a 5 day pay or quit notice right before a snow storm. Land lord lied about amount I owe. claims I haven’t paid for nearly 2 years, last I fell behind was in September 2025 and I paid 500 that month toward it. Rent is 1,800 a month. they want 19k, claims last payment was feb 2024 and saying back rent is February 2024-2026 (marked out on paper even, originally put February 2025 to February 2026, marked it out and changed it to February 2024- February 2026). I was given this notice before a snow storm, knowing no way I can get out to move the rest of my stuff which I’ve been communicating about prior trying to move (between sickness, chronic pain and no help from anyone, and weather, ive been delayed getting out from my original thirty day notice). theres No way I can pay 19k, which is not truly what I owe, and I’m still trying to move stuff with bad, icy roads. Do I stand any ground here to get a few extra days? Landlord doesn’t communicate and ignores texts and calls.
