Late Father's Roomate Plans On Destroying My Father's Belongings. I Am Out Of The Country, What Are My Options?
Location: Georgia.
My father sadly passed away two days ago and we sadly live in another country and we were unable to be there with him. We are arranging for cremating him and flying him to our country so he gets a proper burial.
The issue is that my father left a lot of belongings. We do not care about clothes or tools he had, as they would be complicated to send back to our country anyway. However, he had a lot of family pictures and personal documents that are really important.
We talked with a roomate of his, who was there when he passed away and he told me that he is planning on destroying his cellphone, the documents and photos he left as my father apparently told him to do so in the case he passed away. I do not know if it's true. I do not think so.
I know someone I trust who is willing to go and pick the documents and everything and ship them back. However, the roomate told me he would think about sending \*some\* photos of the originals before destroying everything and he won't give anything to anyone. I am against the clock here and I know there is a storm coming in Georgia.
If I call the police, is there anything I can do? Can they hold on my father's things while I send a power of attorney to the person I know so they can pick them up?
I would rather not to escalate this to the police, since the roommate appears to be an immigrant and could get him in trouble, but as I said, If he destroys everything, we won't have anything from him anymore.
