Let My Friend Babysit My Car, It Is Now (likely) Totaled

Card image cap

I left two weeks ago on a 2-month work trip overseas, and before I left I was concerned that my 2016 Civic would suffer from being stationary for two months, so after hours of consideration and paranoia, I ultimately decided to let my friend babysit the car. I asked him if he could turn it on, circle the parking lot a couple times every once in a while, or to simply let it idle for a few minutes at the minimum. I also noted that if he really needed to drive it elsewhere, to only do so somewhere close. I knew he had just received his license so part of me trusted him, but I did have a bad feeling. I did not hint at him being able to take it on the freeway or to use it on a daily basis, which is what he had been doing, but since he had his license and two weeks had gone by without any news, I figured it was okay. In hindsight it was stupid, and although the trust was there and he probably thought it was cool to do as he pleased with the car, I’m still upset that he ignored my obvious reluctance about letting him have the key. Today he failed to yield and got the car t-boned, deploying the airbags and likely totaling the car. Nobody was hurt, which I am happy about, of course. But I’ve yet to fully pay off the car, and if I’m found fully liable for the incident, I’d be without a car while still owing money for the loan and insurance. My friend breached my trust, and as unethical as it may be, I’m willing to let whoever I need to let know that I should not take the fall for this. It’ll hurt potentially harming my friend and our relationship, but I absolutely cannot allow myself to be affected by this. I need pointers, please. Thank you.
