Location: Massachusetts. Mom Taped An Airtag Underneath My Car, Is This Legal?
Location: Massachusetts, USA
I am 25F and my car was paid for in full, 50% by mom and 50% by my dad. My dad paid all the fees and he pays the insurance each month. I am the only driver listed (insurance) for the vehicle; eg I am the only one who ever drives it. He is the legal owner of the car (not her, even though they split the cost) and he has the title and all paperwork, it is registered to my Dad
Rewind-- My parents separated in 2015. They are not divorced, not even today in 2026. They are still legally married, but in 2015 my Dad moved into an apartment the next town over. The car was gifted to me as a college graduation present
After graduation, I eventually moved back home, and I moved back in with Mom because she has a house and Dad has a 1bdr apt. I started working after graduation, and was laid off after a few months of doing finance compliance/legal department trainee positions due to AI now doing the job. It's taken me a while to find a new job. I finally found one, and told my Mom I had an interview
When I arrived to the interview, my iPhone alerted me to an AirTag that had been following me. My mother had taped an airtag to the bottom of my car to follow my movements when I told her I was job hunting and regularly accuses me of not looking for a job, or not trying hard enough.
was this legal for her to do?
I did not call police or do anything at all because so am relying on her for a place to live, but it was extremely violating being 25 and her taping an airtag under my car to track me
