Locked Out Of Apartment Michigan - They Have Not Filed In Court Yet

Card image cap

Location: Michigan

I am behind on rent in my apartment because I got laid off. I have been in constant contact with my landlords about this matter, assuring them I will pay as quickly as possible and as I understand this is not a charity will move out of my own accord if it comes to that. My last email from my landlord said that if I am able to move out and turn in the keys to my apt by this weekend, they will not file in court (I have this in writing in an email). I have been frantically packing ever since and it is not the weekend yet. I'm right on track to be fully moved out.

However, I came home tonight and the building security (Swiftlane, it scans your face and you can also enter a code) informed me I was invalid, as well my code. I went on the Swiftlane website immediately and my account has been completely removed, stopping me from getting in the building and therefore my room. I own a cat who could have starved (thankfully he was with my parents at the time) and obviously have many many belongings here.

Is there any legal action I can take to regain access to my belongings? Should I hire a lawyer before I even confront them about this?

A couple important final notes, as I'm far from perfect in this situation: 1. if I'm able to get in the building (lucky enough for another resident to walk by) my physical room keys still work, and 2. I am incredibly lucky to have a support group that could pay the amount if absolutely necessary, though it would potentially be the end of the friendship, as it would still affect them greatly to lose that much money themselves.

Any help in this matter would be so greatly appreciated, thank you to those who even just take a glance.
