Management Trying To Get Rid Of Union?
Location: NY
Where I work there is a union, last year everything was fine. Employee turnover was normal for our line of work. This year, under new management, we have seen multiple people quit. Our representatives are constantly in meetings, if they’re allowed to attend at all. Management is implementing dozens of new rules and procedures that contradict their reasoning. When we were down a person they looked for a freelance person rather than hiring new, thus union, or attempting to move people from within the company already.
My real question is, if they are making new rules to drive out the work force and replace them with non union workers, how long until the union is defunct or loses bargaining power? The contract is until 2018, but could they cancel early if there are too few unionized employees?
Everything that is happening seems to be targeted to the union workers. Even when union workers point out concerns about safety, management job performance, cost saving measures, etc. we are told to “stay in your lane and follow orders” with a finger point, gritted teeth, and wide eyes (feels threatening). I’ve been documenting everything for a couple months now. What should I do? I liked the job last year, but this year we’re degraded, insulted, and borderline threatened.
