Martial Art Contract

Location: Texas, Harris County

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on a situation with my child’s martial arts school in Texas.

We enrolled our 4-year-old in a program, and at the time of signup, we were told clearly (more than once) that we could cancel at any time. That was a major reason we agreed to join.

After trying it for a while, we decided it’s not a good fit and asked to cancel. Now they are telling us:

  • The contract has no cancellation clause (except relocation or medical reasons)
  • It’s a 72-month program (about 6 years)
  • They are offering a 6-month cancellation as a “courtesy”

The contract does mention “72-month program” in the program description and number of payments is 72.

Monthly payment is about $550.

This feels really unreasonable, especially for a young child, and not what was explained to us at signup.

My questions:

  1. Is something like a 72-month contract actually enforceable in Texas?
  2. Does being told verbally that we could cancel anytime matter at all?
  3. If we refuse to pay and cancel anyway, what’s the realistic risk (collections, credit, court)?

Appreciate any insight, especially from anyone familiar with Texas law or similar situations.
