Mom Opened Credit Cards In My Name To "help" Build My Credit, Then Maxed Them Out. What Do I Do?
I am posting this on behalf of my friend, who has given me permission to share her story. Location: Alabama
My friend (30s F) has struggled when it comes to family. Currently, she has allowed her mother to move in with her in what was understood to be a temporary arrangement that has already lasted longer than it was meant to, and she admits that the offer was probably a mistake. Her mother works, but makes very little, and while she contributes to the apartment in forms of cooking and cleaning, does not contribute monetarily. Friend has struggled when it comes to money for reasons beyond her control and is the only one paying bills in this situation.
The current most pressing issue is as the title states. Her mother opened several credit card accounts in my friend's name without disclosing it to her. She only found out because of emails she got, stating the denial or approval of said credit accounts. When approached about it, mom admitted to opening them, stating that it was for friend's benefit to help build her credit. Besides the obvious, the big problem is mom has already maxed out or gone over some of the cards' limit, which, of course, has put friend in all sorts of distress without really knowing the best way to handle it. Her mom has promised to give her money to pay down the cards, but hasn't done more than give $30 for a minimum payment on one of them. I've been able to convince her of how bad this situation really is and to report it and try to freeze her credit, though I can't say whether I know it was the best first step or not.
She has called one of the credit companies and left a message with an automated AI that she got saddled with, and for another she has already used points accrued from using the card to pay off some of the debt, so she's unsure if that means she's taking accountability for that account and so must continue to pay it off whether or not she opened it. She's determined to wait if she needs to to see if the message gets through to whomever the AI machine is supposed to deliver it too.
She is scared of confronting her mother or getting her in trouble, even though this is not her mother's first offense when it comes to financial dishonesty. What can she do to best handle whatever needs to come next? Any advice from those more knowledgeable or experienced would be much appreciated.
