Moved In Her Sister And Her 3 Kids. Want To Withhold Some Rent. Can I?
Location: New Jersey. If i need to get more specific i’ll edit it.
I’m subleasing a room from someone I met off facebook marketplace, we’ll call her S. We lived together fine, barely talking to one another, simply put, just coexisting. On September 4th, She calls me and says “My sister and her kids need to stay for a week, can she?” I agreed on the contingency that it was only gonna be a weeklong thing. Clearly, they’re still here as of October 19th. I’ve contacted S and said in many ways, I don’t want them here! I’ll attach exact messages in the comments. I’ve been considering withholding half of my rent until they leave. I’m not on the official lease with the development that we live in, but I have a lease between S and I. I just want to know if I can do that. I was planning on warning her, saying that I will be withholding half of my rent on the 21st, basically saying “Hey. You lied to me, Until they leave you’ll be getting half payments of rent since double the amount of adults live here.” Any advice would be appreciated.
