Moving Truck Caught On Fire - At A Loss For What To Do
location: Chicago, IL
I rented a moving truck from Budget and bought their insurance on it which claimed to fully cover the vehicle . After an only 5 hour drive, the truck caught on fire and exploded after flashing a transmission warning. I lost around $1800 worth of my belongings. We did everything we were supposed to. We obtained a police report, contacted their roadside assistance to get the truck towed, and filed a claim for my lost items. It's been about a month since then and I can't get ahold of anyone about the status of my claim as I sleep on a partially destroyed mattress that I cannot afford to replace. I thought the claim would be all I had to deal with, however, until I got a huge charge to my bank account. I was not contacted in any way before being charged nearly $3000 by Budget and was given no explanation as to what this charge was. I am not rich by any means, so this made my bank account negative by $2000. I now have incurred overdraft fees, cannot afford food, rent, credit card bills, etc. I don't get paid for 12 more days so I'm literally in an unlivable situation right now. I reached out to their customer care team and apparently the charge was for the amount of days the truck was past due. So even though the entire thing caught on fire, exploded, was un driveable, and got towed, they were charging me as if I was in possession of that vehicle for weeks and like it was not on the impound lot. The customer care team told me it was a mistake and I was wrongfully charged, but because it was such a large amount of money they would have to escalate my case and that I would hear back within 72 hours. Well, it's now been 96 hours and I have heard nothing, keep trying to call only to be told there's nothing they can do until this higher supervisor person calls me back. I'm now out nearly $5000 total because of this mess. Budget took everything I had and more and I'm left with a negative bank account. I also suffered much emotional distress from the accident, as my family members nearly died and because I lost so many of my things. The whole event was traumatizing and I keep replaying it in my head. I just want my money back but it doesn't even seem like they are going to give it back to me. What do I even do in this situation? Is there anything I can do?
edit: yes, I used my debit card for the truck. I'm young and this was my first time ever renting anything. I wouldn't have had enough balance on one of my credit cards to cover the full cost of the truck (because I don't make much money my full available balances are like $500 per card). in hindsight, maybe I should've had one of my parents use their credit card and I pay them back immediately but we just really never expected anything like this to happen
update: i filed a dispute for the $3000 with my bank. I have evidence of being wrongfully charged but they have to do an investigation so I will get a temporary credit back within 10 days and find out the results of my dispute within 90. called budget again and am still waiting on this one supervisor to approve the refund. we will see what happens first
