My Boss Hasn't Been Paying Me My Whole Paycheque, What Should I Do?

Card image cap

Location: Canada, Alberta

This is my (18) first real job Ive had, and my manager who owns and runs the whole building hasn’t been giving me the tip I make or pay me my full hours. For context, I work as a host/server at a fast casual pizza restaurant with only 2 other host/servers.

I started working there last December, and from the start, my pay check has been missing several hours worth of work and and money. For example, I would work for 29 hours, but on my pay stub it only says I was paid for 27.5 hours. This has been happening every single time. I have brought it up to him, and he says I only get paid for the hours im scheduled? So since that conversation I have been trying to make sure I clock in/out right on the hour, but my pay stub is STILL missing a few hours each time.

I have also recently realized that he isn’t giving me the tip money I make. Last week he gave me $20 for the last 2 weeks worth of tips I made, but when I went back to check in the system, it said I made about $160 for all the tables I had. In the contract, it says we must give 4.5% of all tips earned to the kitchen, not unusual, but I guess the manager has been keeping the rest of the money I make for himself? I’ve brought it up with another server, as she agrees with me that the manager shouldn’t be doing this and its not fair.

These problems have persisted for several months, and Im missing several hundreds of dollars from my hourly pay and tip money. I dont know what I should do. Ive slowly been looking for a new job, but unsuccessful so far. My parents have been explaining a few of these things to me, about how this type of stuff is actually illegal to do, but I would just like some advice of what to do now, like what rights do i have in this situation. Any advice would be helpfu.

Sorry for any formatting issues, im not great at explaining, and its my first post :)
