My Car Was Hit And Towed With Police On Scene And I Was Never Informed
Location: Silver Spring, MD
I had my car parked on the street overnight almost a week and a half ago, came out early morning prepared to go to work but instead of my car being there I saw shattered glass which I assumed was from my drivers side window being broken into and stolen. I drive a hyundai and was in a spotty neighborhood with a history of car theft, so of course that's my assumption.
There was a car maybe 10ft behind where my car was that looked like it had been in a wreck, parked crooked, so then I thought maybe my car and his got hit in the middle of the night and my car was pushed into the road and had to be towed. I called the tow company that services the apartment complex I was staying in, no record of them having my car. I called the non emergency line and asked if they had any record of my car being towed that night, also nothing. So I proceeded to report my car stolen to police and insurance. Put in a rental, all that good stuff.
Friday afternoon insurance calls me and says my car was recovered and is in a police impound lot, I went to see it on Monday(yesterday) and the car was without a doubt in a bad accident however no signs of a break in, windows in tact, ignition in tact, battery was just dead. So now I was even more confused. My boyfriend and my mom and I came up with a theory it was just hit and towed away. Boyfriend found a police business card with a report number written on it wedged in my wipers so we grabbed that.
Sure enough the impound lot confirms it was towed from where it was parked after being hit along with 2 other cars(weren't towed) around 4am with photos of the scene (that they didn't allow me to get a copy of or take a picture of). So I update my insurance claim to a collision, go to a police station to retrieve a copy of the report, insurance takes my car to two body shops who both refused it and it's now at a salvage lot awaiting an estimate (it's without a doubt totaled).
I guess my question lies here, this happened around 4am on september 5th, police were on scene and made a police report with each car and it's owners involved information on it. Why was I not informed? Can I do absolutely anything about that? The police completely failed to do their job. If I reported my car stolen only hours after it happened at 7am, how did the police not connect the dots?? There were absolutely NO attempts to make me aware that my car was hit and towed away. No missed calls from that date, no voicemails, no mail, nobody showed up to my house. I only just got a paper in the mail yesterday, sept 14th, saying I will lose ownership of my car if I do not collect it from the lot, gee thanks.
Not sure if it's important but my new plates and registration that were in my glovebox were sitting on the drivers seat of my car in the impound lot. The impact very well might've just popped it open and threw my stuff out, but if that's not the case and they went into my car looking for my information IT WAS THERE, so WHY was I not contacted?? I just bought the car 6 weeks ago after my first car was also totaled and I'm absolutely gutted and livid the police did absolutely nothing to update me on the whereabouts of my car when they knew the entire week it was reported stolen and I had no clue where it was
