My Dad Passed Without Doing Any Planning, And His Car Was Towed Before He Was Declared Dead.

Basically my dads life quest to "not be a burden" on others has created a huge burden in his wake. I don't have his vital records, I have tossed his apartment trying to find SOMETHING, but difficult to say the least.
He has what would qualify as a small estate, and I know the process. I know there are ways to get all the information. The problem I am running into is trying to get his car out of the impound lot and we're basically on a time table.
His car was towed on 2/27 for expired registration (it wasn't expired, verified with PD), and he was noticed 3/5 that in 30 days it will be sent to auction(He never even picked up the mail for weeks). I have the title to the car, I have his purchase paperwork, I have his ID. The yard won't release it, and I have 13 days to figure this out until they auction it off.
He was divorced, and has no other biological children other than myself.
What options do I have for me to get this car released before it goes to auction?
