My Ex Is Threatening To Sue Over Bed Bugs Months After Moving Out
About 6 months ago my ex moved out of my apartment. While she was living with me, we did have a bed bug issue. She knew about it and even helped try to treat it at the time. I eventually treated the problem and I haven’t seen any signs of bed bugs in about 3-4 months.
Recently, her friend (who she now lives with) started messaging me saying they have bed bugs and that I should pay for the extermination. My ex herself hasn’t been contacting me directly — the friend has been speaking for her and threatening to take me to court if I don’t pay.
For context, after my ex moved out of my place she lived in two other places before moving in with this friend. I told the friend that if my ex had something to say she should contact me directly, and that I’m not responsible for extermination costs after this much time and with her living in multiple places since.
Since then, they’ve contacted one of my family members and their spouse about it, and yesterday my neighbor came to my door saying my ex warned them they might need an exterminator because of a “bed bug situation.” My ex still hasn’t contacted me herself.
At this point I feel like they’re trying to pressure me into paying. I’m wondering if I’m actually at risk legally here, or if this is more of a scare tactic.
