Tenants From 8 Years Ago Sabotaged Home, Can We Do Anything?
Location: Brisbane, Aus
Background: My mum owns an investment property. 8 years ago she had tenants that lived in this home for a couple of years. My partner and I were wanting to stay at a place on our own so my mum suggested renting her place.
She gave the appropriate notice (and gave extra time) via appropriate channel to the tenants, and they were not happy. They refused to move and we also had to get the police involved.
When we moved in, we could tell they sabotaged the house. Iron burn marks in the carpet, holes in the wall, garage motor hosed and wet as well as the garage ceiling etc.
My mum just accepted the bond deposit and did not want to pursue them further to not upset them.
Fast forward 8 years later. I’m surprised it had taken this long, but our kitchen and bathroom drainage suddenly started backing up. Had a plumber come check some pipes and saw a whole heap of tennis balls and large rocks thrown in, obvious sabotage behaviour.
My Q, is there anything legal my mum could pursue to recoup any of this damage? Especially if it has been so long. I don’t believe there was a police report for the tenants when we almost needed them to remove them from the property.
Long shot I know, it’s probably a no.
