My Father Died W/o A Will, Need Advice (staten Island)

Card image cap

Location: Staten island.

So as my title say my(36) bio dad(57) died suddenly this sunday without a will and it's a nightmare since.

A) i'm a french canadian living in Quebec and he lived and died on staten island.

B) Long story short he's my bio dad but not the one on my birth certificat.

C) He has a wife (house both in their name) and she think everything will go back to her because my father said so.

I'm not sure where to start, i'm on staten island for the week to help my dad wife with all the thing that need to be done.

So i guess my questions are:

A) in case of small heirloom (40k collection, books, painting) do i need to file some paper for customs?

B) Do i need a lawyer, DNA test to prove i'm his son or does instagram/fb post where he call me his son + messenger text where he say in french "that's my son" or call me fils and fiston(both mean son) will suffice?

C) I saw that in ny in case like this with no will it's 50k to the spouse and then 50/50 between the spouse and children, is it worth it to risk to angry her to go have my fair share? House is both in their name, he have a 401k, life insurance and money aside. We still don't know how much. She's a good person and i consider her family, but my guess is that she's gonna sell the house, return close to her brother and sister and be limited to a call or two per year.
