My Mom Believes Her Bookkeeper Has Been Stealing Thousands Of Dollars From Her. How Can I Help Her?!
Location: Massachusetts, USA
My mom has never been good with paperwork yet has been a small business owner for decades. As a result, she’s depended on hired “bookkeepers” for help processings various financial aspects of her life. About a year ago, my mother hired a bookkeeper to help wind down her very small business and prepare her for retirement. This included an in depth review of her personal finances and included access to bank accounts. The rate was verbally agreed upon at $1600 per month.
The services started excellent. My mom felt prepared and in good hands. Bills were paid and the bookkeeper was helping get organized.
Unfortunately I’ve just learned my mom believes the bookkeeper has been writing and cashing checks directly from my mom’s account above and beyond the $1600. Additionally, she has not been performing any services the last few months. Bills have gone unpaid, phone calls unanswered. The overage amounts to roughly $6000 but with the monthly payment for services not rendered, the amount is closer to $20k.
My mom has closed the bank account. She has gone to the local police to report embezzlement.
I’ve suggested she begin collecting any correspondence between her and the bookkeeper. I told her to obtain her bank statements and records. I’ve told her we need to contact an attorney for what to do next.
Is this good advice? What else can I do to help my mom? Please help :(
