My Mom Bled Out Internally For Days In The Hospital Causing Permanent Damage. Do We Have Legal Recourse?
Location: Nevada
A doctor cut my mom’s bladder while performing her c-section. He sewed her back up without fixing it and she bled internally for two days in the hospital. She ended up flat lining, they brought her back, and then realized she was bleeding internally. They remediated the internal bleeding issue and sent her home once she recovered. Since then she has had to go to the emergency room multiple times for hyponatremia due to siadh. She nearly died during one of these visits to the ER and demyelination to her brain occurred. She ended up seeing a specialist who determined that she has empty sella syndrome due to sheehan’s syndrome. Basically, her pituitary gland got damaged from losing so much blood. The internal bleeding incident in the hospital happened 14 years ago but we only just discovered that it damaged her pituitary gland. We don’t have any record of the event and google states that hospitals in NV are only required to keep medical records for five years. Also, my mom called the hospital and they said they don’t have her records.
I know the timeline is probably the biggest barrier here, but is there any possibility of legal recourse after this amount of time? We’re mainly wondering whether it’s worth trying to consult a malpractice attorney or if the time window has likely closed completely.
