My Mom Was Recently Unemployed Due To Sketchy Circumstances And Is Struggling To Get Any Help/answers.
Location: Pennsylvania.
Note: Much of this information is second hand so I'm going to work with what I've been told to the best of my ability.
My mom has been a bartender at her local chapter of a private club for the better part of 25 years. Recently, the club was abruptly shut down due to financial hardship (which we have learned was due to severe mismanagement). The entire ordeal was rather shady and since then even more information has come to light which has made landing on her feet in this situation feel impossible.
After receiving the news of the closure, the state headquarters stepped in to try and salvage what they could and assess the full picture financially. They refused to allow the club manager to touch the payroll software due to a lack of trust and communicated to my mom and the other employees that they would handle the process for receiving their final paychecks. This was over a month ago and they have yet to receive them. Furthermore, she has been unable to collect unemployment because while the club manager continued to pay into it, he neglected to report their income for the last 6 months. This has since been semi-remedied as she manually submitted her bank statements to the unemployment office yesterday and is now waiting to hear back.
The real shady part is this: When going through the club's financial records, an estimated 185,000 dollars was missing and unaccounted for (something to the tune of 20k a month for the last 9 months). As a result, the state police have now become involved in the situation and have seized the office computers/files as evidence. The contact for the state headquarters of the club has since stopped contacting my mom and her other coworkers, leaving them in limbo as to what the hell is going on. One of her coworkers has contacted the state Department of Labor who claimed that they will reach out to the state headquarters on her behalf. My mom is really struggling financially and has never been great at thinking on her feet so I'm trying my best to help come up with a list of actionable items for her to begin working on. She unfortunately has very little of this information in writing.
My main questions are: Are there any other steps that she could take that haven't been explored to hasten receiving her final paycheck/unemployment benefits? Is it worth it for her to contact an attorney to explore legal actions, if any can be taken at all? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated, and if there are any further questions about her situation I will do my best to answer them.
