My Sibling Is Trying To Take Loans Out In My Name

Card image cap

Location: Illinois.

Sorry long post. This is a lot of drama.

I (33F) live in Charlotte, NC and my family lives in Chicago, IL. I visited them in Chicago over Christmas, and while in town, my older sister (I’ll call her B) stole my debit card and used it, tried adding that same card to Apple Pay (I called my bank and they confirmed the phone number trying to add the card), hacked my wayfair account (she changed the main phone number to hers..?), tried hacking my cashapp (I got a text on my phone showing the location of where someone was trying to sign in- it was the suburb she lives in Chicago), and she tried hacking my Amazon account. I also got a text while in Chicago yesterday saying I was denied a loan because I have too many hard inquiries. That freaked me out, so I checked Credit Karma and saw 7 loans were attempted 12/4/25. B texted me that same day asking me what my monthly mortgage is (I didn’t tell her). Last time I checked, I had maybe 1 hard inquiry. I immediately froze my credit.

In October 2025, I had a mysterious charge on my credit card for a hotel in Chicago. A few weeks later, my little sister (I’ll call her H) told me B stole her credit card and also stole cash from H’s daughter- she’s only 10 years old. I was cautious coming to Chicago for the holidays and kept my wallet in a safe (I stayed in a hotel near my moms), but there was a brief period it was left out in the open in my room. I am worried B took a photo of my ID and credit card while I was sleeping. The hotel I stayed at gave her a key to my room without asking for ID.

I confronted B 12/26/25 early morning after I noticed all the theft. B lives in a suburb far from my mom’s house, so I booked her a hotel room at the same hotel I was at over Christmas. I wanted to be nice, I shouldn’t have gotten her a room knowing she’s been stealing from family. Anyways, she denied the theft, so I asked her to leave the hotel. She wouldn’t, so I told her I will have hotel security come up if she isn’t gone in an hour. She then proceeded to call the police and tell them I stabbed her…….. I forgot to mention, she has a drug problem.

So of course many police showed up thinking a stabbing occurred. H was in the room when I confronted B, so with H being a witness, police left but they did file a report for domestic battery (against me) and also for fraud (against her). They told us both we could take the report to the police station and file a warrant for arrest.

At the time I didn’t know about the attempted identify theft, so I left it alone. I am afraid B will issue a warrant for my arrest if I report the fraud, however, H was a witness that no assault occurred.

How do you even start with legal action for identity theft? Thankfully no accounts were opened, but I have 7 hard inquiries on my credit report all on the same day (12/4) as well as all the other theft that happened while in Chicago. There’s so much going on, I’m exhausted, and I don’t know if I have enough concrete evidence it was B. I’m also afraid B will retaliate and make up more false accusations if I go to the police.

Help. ????
