Accepted A Job Offer…woke Up Blind. Sos

Card image cap

Location: Colorado

I will try to keep this concise but it is a weird situation that may require more specifics.

I reside in Colorado and was laid off from my remote job in August. After countless applications I finally got an offer that I signed in mid December, with a start date of January 5th. This new position is also remote, but I believe they are technically HQ’d in Seattle. (Not sure if this is relevant for which state laws apply)

Fast forward 1 week before Xmas. I wake up with severely impaired vision, in and out of ERs/specialists for days and spend a couple nights in the hospital. The running theory is some autoimmune disease triggered and attacked my eyes. I have occlusive vasculitis in both eyes and my vision is pretty worthless. So, in my current state I can’t do the job I accepted. However my doctor is optimistic about saving enough of my vision that I will be able to work on a computer again. The timing is really up in the air but he is recommending not starting work until the beginning of February so we can see how the treatment goes.

I don’t want to show up for this new job and not be able to perform or cause any bad blood with the company as I’m hopeful I will be able to keep this job. I am also concerned they could just revoke the offer because of this. What are my options? Do I start the 5th, hope things improve and count on vision impaired tools? Do I ask to push back the start date? Can they just rescind the offer or am I protected because I signed the acceptance?

All advice is appreciated!! Thank you!
