New Landlord Adding A Lot Of New Rules
Location: NC
Hello all, my apartment building was just bought out by a different company very abruptly. The new landlord wants to renovate immediately. They gave us notices that we could voluntarily vacate for money if we vacated within a week of receiving the letter. Now they’ve started to cut off utilities like laundry and have removed most of our parking spaces until most of the leases end. Some of my neighbors are now being forced to get renter’s insurance (I’m unsure as to why I wasn’t required) or be evicted, despite it not being in the lease we have until July of 2027. Many of my neighbors are being accused of violating the lease with drug charges they’ve never committed (one of the accused only had 2 cigarette butts in an ashtray outside which is permitted by the lease) or sanitation issues that aren’t there and are either being offered to be forcefully evicted or voluntarily leave on the 27th. It feels like they’re slowly trying to get rid of the stuff we’ve paid for or blackmailing my neighbors into leaving. Is this legal? Everyone’s inspections came out clean, so we’re unsure as to where these accusations came from. I’m scared because it feels like we’re slowly being choked out and forced to go. This wasn’t an issue with our previous landlord who had monthly inspections, but now that this new owner is wanting to renovate ASAP, they’re looking for anything to evict the tenants. I spoke with a few today and they’re all being falsely accused of something and have several new monthly fees, besides me.
