New Landlord Is Telling Me To Figure It Out.

Card image cap

Location: Minnesota, USA. We just relocated to Minnesota from a different state. I rented a house from someone after only seeing it through video call. He made me aware that there were some issues, but that they would be fixed, and the place would be clean when we moved in. Well, we moved in yesterday.

The tub is completely black, and he told us they tried to clean it and we would need to pay to hire professionals to have it cleaned. The previous tenants left extremely bulky items in the backyard, and inside the house. He wants me to move them out into the alley and have them picked up. There is a trashcan missing from the house and he wants me to pay for it to be delivered. The front door is hanging on to nothing but a screw in the doorway, and none of the doors close properly. When we brought this to his attention he told us to figure it out. There is trash all over the backyard buried under the ice, and he told me I have to clean it out once the ice melts. The windows have massive gaps where we can feel the cold air getting into the house. The floors are heavily water damaged. I have not brought this to his attention, as we just noticed it. The walls aren’t painted and have patches all over them, he said he would have someone come paint them, but he doesn’t know when. The fence in the backyard is fallen down, and he says he’ll get it fixed in the spring but after his responses to everything else, I doubt it will get put back up. We are also pretty sure there is dried up dog pee all over one of the rooms.

We signed a one year lease, and are absolutely dreading staying there for the entire year if nothing gets fixed. When I rented the place, I wasn’t expecting luxury but I also wasn’t anticipating having to fix the house up myself. We have a small child and some of these are legitimate safety & hygiene concerns for us. I feel like backing out of the lease.

I had never had something like this happen with previous landlords. What legal recourse do I have if he refuses to fix there’s issues or continues to tell me to figure it out?
