Oil Change Company's Mistake Damaged My Engine

Card image cap

I recently got my oil changed at a well known national chain oil change company. Before I even left the parking lot I noticed the oil pressure light was on. I pulled back around and the tech guy assured me, after checking the oil level, everything was ok. Later that day, I heard engine knocking so I pulled into a local garage. They checked the oil filter and found a critical part was missing. The national chain forgot to replace the part. This part regulates where the oil goes. Without this part no oil was reaching the engine resulting in, according to a few mechanics I spake with and a google search, the exact damage I have. The garage replaced the part for me and said “keep an eye on it”. Fast forward a couple months. Engine light comes on. A third garage found sludge and engine damage. I now need a new engine. The national chain (or at least the franchisee) is refusing to take responsibility, claiming it’s either me or the 2nd garage (the one that found the problem) who is at fault.

Would it help to get corporate involved by letting them know a franchisee is not taking responsibility for a serious mistake?

They did refund the money for the oil change and a letter of apology for the error.
