Opposing Lawyer Lied In Court
Location: Illinois. I was just ruled against today attempting to get my ex to pay a home improvement loan taken out when we were married. She was awarded the house in the settlement.
During my hearing, opposing council stated I make “5x” more than his client, my ex. After this there was a notable shift in the judge. That untrue statement, i believe colored her judgement. After the hearing, my lawyer said the same.
In fact, she takes about 47% of my take home in alimony and support and she works full/time. She effectively makes more money than I do.
Judges final reasoning was that the MSA did not detail the loan as part of the settlement other than some general language about her “being responsible for obligations of the home” Since the loan was only in my name (she was unemployed at the time) it is only my debt.
I’m assuming there’s nothing I can do and I am now responsible for 11k of debt for a home I have no stake in.
