Our Neighbor Has Been Harassing Us With Legal Threats For Over A Year Since We Moved In.
Location: Central Virginia, U.S.
For context: We are one of the last houses down a narrow gravel road and this neighbor lives completely surrounded by trees, next door, but secluded.
Since January of last year, our neighbor has:
- called the police on my parents for "trespassing" multiple times (no actual trespassing, just being in our backyard) first they came, then they put a notice on our door
- reported us to the county for having an non-functioning vehicle outside our garage (had been there for 2-3 days at that point)
- sued us for damage to property, case was thrown out because there was no evidence, but he appealed it so we are actively dealing with that
Now, we have received another letter from his attorney stating that our property is "so derelict" it's decreasing his property value. Our house is genuinely, objectively, fine. Maybe the yard isn't perfectly trimmed and green, but we also intentionally did not choose to live in a HOA neighborhood, so can someone explain to me what this guy's problem is? He plans to "file an action for nuisance and get an appraisal" (which he also hopes to seek compensation for). Is this even worth responding to? I just don't understand where he can pull these claims out of. I don't see this being viable in court because there really is nothing wrong with our house, but I'm still scared as we are working-class and cannot afford to throw money at lawyers and court fees.
Any advice would be truly appreciated.
For even more context: We are a visibly Latino family.
