Package Sent To My House Labeled "return To Sender", Sending Address Was Indeed Mine But Not The Sender. Opened The Package To Find Illegal Substances. Help!

Location: Colorado, United States

I received a package today stating "Return to Sender: no such address".

The sending address was indeed my home and primary residence, though the sender's name was "Customer Service Department".

Not knowing what else to do, I opened the package as it was my address.... to find federally controlled hallucinogenic substances.

Inside the package was also a sticker promoting the company, so I went to the address to find a full on shroom business.

My questions are as follows:

  • My wife and I bought this house two years ago - what are the odds that this package has legitimately been bouncing around the postal system for that time, and that the former occupants were running a shroom growhouse inside our house?
  • Am I criminally responsible for opening the package, addressed from my home but from "Customer Service Department"?
  • Should I report this to USPS? My first instinct is to destroy the package, as I'm not keen on being charged with possession of or distributing, but I don't want to do so if the best path forward is to report and provide the package as evidence.
