Paying Back A Sign-on Bonus?

Card image cap

Location: Minnesota
A few years ago I was hired in a leadership position at a hospital. I agreed to a 20k sign on bonus, agreeing to stay for 2 years. The bonus agreement states that if I leave before 2 years I owe 100% of the money.
I worked for about 18 months and had to leave due to an incredibly toxic work environment. I was being treated horribly by both leaders and employees. On top of that, I was pregnant and the stress and anxiety from work was killing me. I actually took a 3 week LOA before leaving, trying to get help for my anxiety and stress but ultimately I just had to step away. My doctor also recommended that I quit for my own health.

Now, almost two years after leaving, the company is coming after me for the sign on bonus. I got a letter from their lawyer requesting payment. This is a very large company.
I am wondering if I have any argument to make that I did not leave because I wanted to, but because the company failed to provide a safe work environment for me. I thought I’d offer to pay 50% of what they’re asking, and then we can both move on.

How should I respond to this legal notice, and do I have any chance of success here?
