Police Escalated A Mental Health Emergency And Arrested The Person In Crisis. What The Fuck?

Hello internet lawyers.

I called 988 for help because my partner was threatening self harm. The suicide hotline told me to call 911 and ask for a CIT (Crisis Intervention Team). I did just that, also requesting no police lights because I knew it would freak my partner out.

Well the supposed CIT shows up, thee cars, all of their lights blaring. Partner freaks out and barricades. These six dipshits jump out of their cruisers and immediately start barking orders at us, hands on their pistols. My partner and I are both obviously terrified.

We are separated from each other and forbidden from speaking to one another. The situation somewhat calms down, but then out of nowhere they decide that a domestic assault has happened because my partner had a knife with them.

Virginia has "shall arrest" laws surrounding domestic violence. So now my partner who was just finally starting to calm down from a suicidal crisis is being cuffed and dragged into a squad car. I go to follow to ask WTF is going on, and again the hands go down to their guns.

My question is simply what the fuck just happened and what is going to happen? How on earth is any of this supposed to help my partner out of crisis? Their arraignment is tomorrow and they are in absolute mental disarray, scared they will lose their job or even go to jail.

Sorry this is jumbled up and missing lots of info. Just confused and scared right now.

Called 911 to help with a mental health crisis but they ended up creating a crime where there wasn't one. Person in crisis is arrested and charged and now in an even worse state.
