Possible Issues Obtaining New Passport From Embassy - Old Passport Exposed To Hazardous Materials

Card image cap

Location: Peru (dealing with embassy)

I am a us citizen currently in Peru and need a new passport. At the advice of another party (which i now realize i misunderstood), I told the embassy that my passport was exposed to hazardous materials and as i do not have any physical identification, requested a replacement using records to confirm my identity. I later spoke with the embassy on the phone and they seemed very suspicious and are are now formally asking asking for details including the date of the exposure, the chemical and the location.

What actually happened is I have serious chronic health problems and am very sensitive to certain substances. All of my belongings were exposed to something that makes me extremely sick and tenaciously sticks to my clothing and belongings. Ive never been able to clean it off of belongings to where i stop reacting, and it seems to spread easily, but does not seem to affect other healthy individuals. I encountered the substance at an airbnb in another country and don't actually know what it is, it also doesn't have a smell and is not visible to the naked eye. I don't want to give unnecessary information to the Embassy if it may cause me further problems, but I need a new passport so I can leave Peru.

I wanted to decide whether I should just tell them what actually happened, or if I should take this in a different direction. I have this uncomfortable feeling that I may run into issues or even get stranded here if I say the wrong thing but it could just be how I felt about their tone last we spoke and I shouldn't have any issues.
