Property Taxes Being Paid By Someone Unknown

Card image cap

Location: California

Someone is paying my property taxes by phone. This is the first year (2025-26) it's happened. The county will not say who is doing it (won't give me the phone number that was recorded, even though they've told me they know it).

I've asked if *they* would at least contact the person who called & paid the amounts. They said, simply: NO. They did say - if that person was *accidentally* paying it, then they could reverse the payments or move them to that person's parcel, and then I'd have to pay the then-unpaid taxes relatively quickly or be fined.

But, I just keep thinking - could this be something nefarious? I've been reading about "adverse possession", but that requires 5 continuous years of tax payments. Otherwise, I just find info that someone else paying your taxes bears no changes to property possession; they are just basically paying your taxes for you (how kind).

Is there any way to force the county tax collector (or county treasurer?) to release the phone number to me so I can try to identify who is doing this?

Am I missing something? Overreacting? Fire away.
