Received A Letter Saying A Court Issued A “legal Document For My Arrest” But I Have No Idea What It’s For.

Location: Virginia

It says I’m “subject to immediate arrest” if I encounter a police officer and tells me to turn myself in at the Chesterfield County Jail. It also says neither the Magistrate’s Office nor Sheriff’s Office can discuss the case over the phone and that I need to appear in person with ID.

The letter does NOT say what the charge is, what the document is, a case number, or a warrant number. It specifically just says “legal document for your arrest.”

I called the Sheriff’s Office using the official number and they confirmed that they can see something in their system, but they couldn’t tell me what it was for. They asked whether I had court recently. I don’t have any upcoming court and thought my previous case was completely resolved.

I did have a previous court case earlier this year. I paid the court bill online while I was actually speaking with the clerk. I believe I later received another bill for somewhere around $300–$500 that seemed to be from the Commonwealth/state rather than the court itself. I’m not 100% sure what that bill was or whether it was ever paid.

There was also approximately $7,000 in guardrail/property damage from the incident, but my insurance is handling that, so I don’t know whether that has anything to do with this.

I checked Virginia’s online court system and don’t see a new Traffic/Criminal case under my name. The only thing showing is an administrative license-suspension case from the previous matter.

My main question is: has anyone in Virginia/Chesterfield received a letter like this? Is this something that can happen because of an unpaid court cost/restitution/payment issue from an existing case, or does this generally indicate a completely new criminal matter?

I’m obviously going to get this resolved — I’m just trying to understand what I’m dealing with before I show up at the jail.
