Rent Increase Over 50% For Disabled Tenant Ca

Card image cap

Location: California

My family has been renting a house in California for 30 years now. We have been beyond blessed by our angel of a landlord. We got a 1 br, 1bth house for 500 dollars a month in Socal. As I said he was an absolute saint. This sweet man cried when he had to raise the rent from 350 to 500.

My mother was a single mother raising us kids and dealing with my on/off dad. She had been working to keep us afloat until her body couldn't keep up with the stress. At 53 she is sitting here on hospice and disability.

Our landlord passed away last month. He left his home to his two adult children. They had told us there would be no changes at first. A few weeks go by and they present the issue that the house is no longer under the prop 13 their dad had meaning their current property taxes on the home are through the roof.

Today they let us know that rent from now on will be 1300 starting next month. This includes a new lease and a new deposit. (My parents had paid a deposit when they first got the home) They mentioned that they would practically be paying us to live here after the taxes hit.

This gives us 18 days to pool together 1300 dollars. They are also intending to sell the house. We are trying to look at buying it but with the increase we might run out of pennies to do so. They are selling off their dad's other properties as well that he also rented out.

Is this a legal increase? I just wanted to see if there's anything to say about this. Thank you in advance for any advice.
