Rental Not Up To Code, Landlord Not Renewing
Location: Iowa
We rented our home through a property management company. The home is owned by a private investor. After we moved in we were told that the house failed the city inspection and didn't get their rental certificate. It was a multi month process of having contractors come on and do all the stuff required to pass inspection. City inspector came through at the end and the property management company told us they passed and everything was fine. Today I spoke to the property manager who told me that the investor didn't follow through on paperwork and now they can't renew our lease because the city won't give them a rental certificate. But then she stated the house wasn't up to code and she didn't even know if they could sell it.
Additional points - rent is paid on time, we are tenants in good standing, no issues. The house has been habitable the whole time we've lived here - the stuff they did to get it up to code originally was all misc stuff. My leave ends July 31 so notice was just shy of 60 days.
I'm trying to figure out what, if any recourse I have here. I understand that a lease can be terminated at the end by either party but I feel like we entered into this agreement in good faith that we were renting a property that was actually able to be legally rented and that was not the case. I'm not looking to ne litigious but this puts us in a really crappy situation and I'm so frustrated that we accommodated all that construction and scrappy contractors only for them not to follow through.
