Returned $2,000 Piece Of Jewelry Using The Seller's Fedex Label, Package Lost By Fedex, Seller Stopped Responding

Location: Georgia, Seller located in: California

So I've been dealing with this for about a month and I'm honestly not sure what to do at this point. Hoping someone here has some advice.

I bought a piece of jewelry from a small business in California for around $2,000 and paid through Zelle. The seller agreed over WhatsApp that if I returned it he'd refund me through Zelle, his website says store credit only but he told me on Whatsapp he would refund me.

The return: He created and sent me a FedEx return label. I dropped the package off February 11 at a FedEx OnSite inside a Dollar General in Georgia. Tracking updated to show it was dropped off, then said something like "package received after final pickup, scheduled for next business day" — and then nothing. Tracking has been completely dead ever since.

What I have:

  • Uncut video of me packaging the item
  • Video of me dropping it off at the store
  • Text receipt from the drop-off
  • FedEx tracking screenshots and an active trace case number
  • Video of a FedEx driver picking up packages from that location the next day (though you can't clearly make out my specific package)
  • All WhatsApp, email, and Instagram conversations with the seller
  • Zelle payment confirmation

I also went to the Dollar General and eventually got to view their security footage. It shows me dropping off the package and a FedEx pickup the next day, but my specific package isn't clearly identifiable in it.

The seller: He was responsive at first. His last message was on February 23rd where he said "let me see what the insurance can do." Since then I've sent 4 messages trying to follow up with him about the Insurance or if there's been an update. He's opened every message I've sent and hasn't said a word. 3 weeks of being left on read.

My questions:

  1. Since the return label was his, am I liable for the package going missing or does that fall on him?
  2. What should I even do at this point given that he's ignoring me?
  3. Is there anything I'm missing or should have done differently?
  4. Do I have any legal way to get my $2,000 back? I'm honestly at a loss here and don't even know where to start.
