Scammed At Work, Lost Money That Is Unable To Be Recovered

I'm speaking for a family member of mine so apologies if my information of the situation is limited.

They were working a minimum wage job/cashier for a sizeable company; they were in charge of loading money onto cash app. They were trained to not send money through phone. They received a call and the person calling knew credible information about the store and innerworkings and had a store number? They also had their personal phone number and info it seems. So it seemed like a higher up of the company who was giving detailed instructions.

They lost 20k for the company and its not able to be retrieved bc sent through cashapp(?) and also the day it was sent it was not able to really retrieve the money, something related to the system.

The boss is still communicating with them and was working on making sure there are no criminal charges, but we will have to end up paying the 20k. They are still waiting for paperwork and more news.

My other family was saying we should call 311 and that it isn't legal or typical to ask someone to pay back such an amount in these sorts of situations even though they were entirely at fault of getting scammed.

This person is a young adult and has no criminal history and such.

I do agree that it would be odd but also the company would/could sue and it's a large amount, if it was a few thousand or hundred, I would think differently. It's also suspicious the degree of info the scammers knew. I'm not really sure how this works, is there anything that can be done? I do not think so, but thought I'd ask! Thank you.

edit: extra info, this person had to verify each transaction that the customer was there (though they werent because it was a call right) but I'm not sure why a cashier is dealing with that large of a sum. Even if that is partly under their job.
