Should I Be A Witness/testify?
Location: Minnesota
My roommate(23) was arrested for domestic assault against my other roommate(20). I was not present for that incident. There was an argument in the group chat beforehand, and the roommate(23) was texting in an aggressive manner.
My roommate(20) understandably decided to stay with family afterwards. However, my roommate(23) had decided to come back after being released. That week, my roommate (23) texted me multiple times. The text messages were similar to the ones in the group chat, and I decided not to reply to the messages. I only ran into her twice on Thursday and didn't look or talk to her.
On Friday, she messaged me that she would do what our roommate did to her and get me arrested. She claims that our roommate lied to the police, and that's why she was arrested. She told me she carries mace around with her at all times, and if I slammed the door again, she would use it on me. This happened because I ordered DoorDash that evening, and our metal screen door doesn't have a stopper. If you don't close the door yourself, it will always slam shut. Everyone in the house always lets the door slam shut. I messaged her and explained that I got DoorDash, and the door slammed shut accidentally, and asked her not to contact me again. I even sent her the photo of the order being dropped off to show I was telling the truth. She told me I have been acting aggressively and made her feel unsafe. I don't understand how, considering I was avoiding her and not messaging her back. For fear of my safety, I stayed with my family until Sunday evening.
On Sunday, my family helped me bring in my groceries, and she came downstairs and told my family, "I hope you are here to help her move and pack up her shit." She and my family got into a verbal fight, and she called the police. When the police arrived, they got both of our statements. I showed the text messages from Friday, and they said it wasn't a direct threat. They told her to no longer contact me or talk to me. If they had one more call to the place, the outcome would be different for her. The following day, the order of protection that my roommate(20) had gotten was served, and she was removed from the home.
Today, my roommate(20) received news that my roommate(23) is contesting the OFP. She asked me if I could send the text messages our roommate(23) had sent me, and if I would be a witness/testify for her.
I'm unsure if anything I had to share would be beneficial for her. I wasn't present for the incident. The police incident I had with my roommate the following week didn't result in an arrest. Would my side of the story make a difference? Would it actually harm her case? I want to help because I am also concerned for my safety if our roommate returns to the house. What is the best way I can help?
