Should I Fight My $1,386.00 Driving Ticket.
Location: Texas
I was driving on my way to work in the morning on the expressway. There’s a cop on the side of the road conducting a stop. There’s pretty heavy traffic since it’s early in the morning and I was not able to move over to the next lane. The speed limit there is 75 and, although I can’t for sure say how fast I was exactly going, I don’t drive fast (reason why I stay in the right most lane) and couldn’t be going over 65-70.
The traffic stop being conducted was on the grass next to road. So we have a whole shoulder lane dividing me from the cop car. Additionally, the stop seemed to be already finished as the cop was already inside his vehicle.
He then proceeded to follow me for a couple minutes until finally he pulled me over and ticketed me for “Failure to move over/slow down for a specific vehicle”.
This is my first ever ticket, I have been driving for 12 years. Never been speeding nothing like that. I went to court and they told me the fine was $1,386.00. They were actively trying to discourage me from fighting it by saying the cop had cameras and full evidence.
To me, the fine seems a little excessive for a first time offense and taking into account all other details. I was also not the only car that drove past that lane.
Should I try to fight it in court? If I do, should I get a lawyer?
Thank you in advance !
