Sibling Stole Identity 5 Years Ago, I Owe $1,800 To A County In A State I've Never Been To
Location: Oregon
Location of Violation: Texas
I am located in Oregon, and have lived here for 10 years. About one month ago, I received a letter in the mail from an attorney's office notifying me that I owed almost $1,900 to a county in Texas, because of several traffic violations. I called the county & they confirmed that there are violations in my name, and scheduled a virtual hearing for me in early December. I have never been to the state of Texas, but my sister who has been in & out of legal trouble for her entire adult life, has traffic violations in that county that are searchable online. They have a photo of "me" (her) from the date of the violations where she gave my information instead of hers. She is currently being held at a facility in a different county in Texas for charges that include fraudulent use or possession of identifying information.
Is this something that is as easy as submitting a photo of myself from around the time these violations occurred to prove that it wasn't me? These violations occurred in 2021, but I was only made aware of them less than a month ago. What do I need to do to prepare myself for this hearing? I have never been in any sort of legal trouble before, and I am really out of my element here. Can I avoid hiring a lawyer for something like this?
