Sisters Boyfriend Took Control Of Executing Dads Estate And Paid Himself $10,000
UPDATE: Thanks to those of you that provided advice related to my question. I have decided that this is not worth it, and they can keep whatever they want. For those of you telling me to shut up - maybe think about the topic of this conversation before being so rude.
Location: Snohomish county, Washington state, USA
I have been living internationally the last three years. Last November, my dad passed away. My mom was really sick, so she gave executor to my half sister (dads daughter), who has a controlling boyfriend. I won’t get into the specifics of that.
Fast forward one year, they say they have a check ready for me. The will stated that everytbing be split 50/50. I asked to see the paperwork because I knew this guy had his fingers in everything and he immediately said no. They were offended that I asked.
Obviously, that made me want to see it more, so I pressed and he spent a few days making some documents that he sent last night. There was $40k they used to prepare the house for sale and pay bills. Seemed okay. When I looked closer, they were paying themselves for fuel $500 (they live 15 minutes from my dads). There were double charges for utilities and landscaping. And they paid themselves $40 an hour for labor to fix the house and do the executor things, totaling $9,860, including charges for “distributing funds” and “accounting.”
When I spoke to my sister, she said she didn’t get paid for her time and labor, which means it all went to her boyfriend. When I asked him about the double charges on some things, he said he found another receipt and took more money from the beneficiary amount.
I tried contacting probate attorneys when this all started a few weeks ago but none have gotten back to me, understandable this time of year. Is what he is doing legal? I know hiring professionals may have cost more but honestly, I’d rather pay the professional than him.
They never checked with me about this. After I went back home, they fired the people I hired/suggested when my mom was executor. They barely kept me up to date on things and excluded me from the whole process.
Edit to add: I want to be clear that it is not the money I am disputing. It is the manner in which it was done. Asking about duplicate charges led to more money being deducted and the original question never addressed.
