Sold Rv 4 Years Ago - Got Notice For Property Tax Today
Location: Currently in MassWe had a seasonal spot at a campground in RI from 2020 to 2022. We sold the RV and vacated the spot at the end of September in 2022. We had mail forwarding that continued until 09/30/2023. Today Aug, 2026, I get a notice from a collections agency for over $1K. I think it is a scam so I call the town where the campground is located and they tell me they bill in arrears and this is for 2021 - the letter says its for 2022. I never received a bill and have evidence I paid taxes in March and August in both 2021 and 2022 so in theory, I should have received something in the mail in March/ August of 2023 when the mail forwarding was still in force. I didn't. The town couldn't answer any of my questions so bounced me around and then said someone would get back to me. The campground says they don't keep track of any of that and also bounced me around but a quick call to the campground by the town would have provided them with my new address - my phone number never changed. I'm sure the town/collector agency have added years worth of interest and late payments to the balance which, on principal, I will not pay. Shame on me but I don't know if they are taxing the personal property (i.e. the RV) or the actual site it was located and I discarded all that history when I bought a new laptop last fall. Regardless, I think this is ridiculous. Not sure anyone here can advice but I'd truly appreciate understanding the law on such situations. Much obliged!
