Son (13) Reportedly Made Threats Against Another Student. Unsure Of How To Proceed.

Location: New Jersey. I got a call on Friday from the town police saying the school contacted them. A student had reported to the school administration that my son had threatened to kill/shoot him and his family.

My son denies that he has even spoken to the student in question outside of briefly in a class they have together and at recess the other day. We also don't know when this occurred so it's tough to pin down. The police have yet to speak with the other child and his parents so I don't know much of their story aside from this.

My wife and I have been asked to come in on Monday to speak with the principal so she can inform us of their protocols for these types of situations.

My son does not have a history of misbehavior. We don't own firearms. I truly believe he wouldn't say something like this but I mean, of course I wouldn't. To me it feels like the other kid is trying to get him in trouble for some reason. I have no idea. I just don't want this to ruin anything in his future. Future high school, college, activities, etc. Is there a right time in situations like this where I should be reaching out to a lawyer? If the school with a zero tolerance policy suspends him and then they find he didn't do anything, do they clean up his record? And would I need to do anything to keep something similar from happening in the future with the other kid?
