Retrieved Vehicle From Impound - Is This A Crime?

Location: Denver, CO
Not me- Someone I know parked their car, went about their business and when they returned their car was gone. They checked the cars location on an app(IDK what app, find my iPhone but for cars?) they went to that location an it was a tow yard, their car was inside the back/middle of the lot. They could see it right when they pulled up. So they just walked in and drove it away. There was no signage that indicated it was an off limits area(No Trespassing, employees only, etc) the vin number was covered but the plates where not(By the owner, covers the vin on the dash).
My question is - Is this a crime. AFAIK the vehicle was parked legally at some business and it appears it was towed. It was not repo-ed. The vehicle was never financed and is owned outright. Seems like either the business had it towed or the tow company the business works with decided to tow it(legit or illegitimate, idk) I would assume it’s just a civil matter at this point?
