Squatters In Neighboring House. Cops Seem Unconcerned. Owner Status Unknown.
Location: Peoria Illinois. Looking for advice on how to deal with squatters living in an abandoned neighboring house. The current owner was an elderly woman who was moved into a nursing home last year and at this point may have passed away. As far as I know she had no relatives. People from her church used to mow her yard and help maintain it, but this summer it appears to be completely abandoned. The Police have been called to the house multiple times due to squatter activity by multiple neighbors who have witnessed activity. Typically a cop shows up, knocks on the door, might step inside briefly, and then leaves with seemingly no further action taken. The back door is hanging wide open, windows are missing.
This sort of thing is somewhat common in Peoria, and sadly often results in total destruction, including house fires. It seems like it normally takes 5 years for these houses to ultimately wind up in tax foreclosure and auction. I want to be proactive here if possible and force the city's hand before it further drags down the neighborhood.
Any advice is appreciated.
