Stolen (?) Birth Certificate

Card image cap

Location: Colorado

I (20F) recently went through a vaguely messy breakup in which my ex removed himself from my lease and moved out in essentially one day (on his own terms). He moved all belongings to his parents home, and got a one way ticket to Georgia.

Shortly after he left, I realized my SS card and Birth certificate were missing when i went to replace my ID for work. He freaked out and apologized, saying he had taken them to his parents. I requested them back, and his family left a plastic bag with just my social security card in the back seat of his unlocked car for me to retrieve from the property.

Well, said ex returned, and offered to check my apartment again for me to ensure he hadn’t misplaced it there before searching his parents. He ended up finding bourbon in my apartment while searching, got sloppy drunk, and had to be driven home.

I drove him back to his apartment (half to ensure his safety, half to ask about the certificate) and his family grabbed him out of my car, threatened to shoot me for being on the property, and his father leaned into my car and spat in my eyes.

That being said, ex went to a mental health center and hasn’t been home to find my paperwork. The father that spat in my eyes is refusing to cooperate or admit he has the paperwork, and does not want police involved because he is not legally allowed on the property he’s been living in since prior to february of this year. I need my birth certificate to continue working, and replacing it through another state is taking an insane amount of money and time.

Is there any logical way for me to have my birth certificate returned while creating as little issues for all parties? I truley do not want to make more of this situation, i just need my paperwork.
