Stranger Approached Me At Work Stating I Damaged His Car In The Parking Lot Two Days Earlier And Wants Me To "resolve" This
I work in a multiuse building with a shared parking lot. A coworker approached me with a note left for me at the reception area by someone who does not work with us or use our business. The note states that he parked next to my car two days prior, now his car is damaged, that an automotive tech examined his car and said it "looked like" a door opened onto his car and that the damage matches up with where my car door would have opened on to his. He also states there is the same color paint on my car door as his--implying he came back looking for my car.
I remember this day. We both have rather high end vehicles (his is 14 years old as noted in the letter, and mine is 5 years old if that matters), and I remember admiring his car when I got in to drive away as it's a very pretty and unique car. I've never seen it parked in the lot before. It was not parked there when I arrived; he parked next to me at some point after I had already arrived. I also remember someone sitting in the driver seat of his car when I went to leave. There was no impact that I can recall, and frankly I'd assume if there was enough damage to transfer paint and dent his car I would think that one of us would have noticed and said something on the spot, not two days later, though I'm sure that doesn't hold up legally.
Furthermore, I inspected my car and there is no paint on my car in a location that would have been from me opening into another vehicle (his is a light color, mine is a dark color). The edge of my car door has some wear and tear along the lower edge, and the underlying metal is lighter than the paint of my car so if you look closely I guess it can look like light color paint, but it clearly isn't once you get up close.
There are no security cameras in the lot.
My question: should I, and how should I respond to this note from a legal standpoint? While I can see leaving a note on a car that you saw cause damage to your own property (though two days later seems off) but coming into my place of work looking for me frankly worries me a bit. I also by nature of my work am there late sometimes, and am often the last to leave after dark with no one else around and no on-site security (I'm a woman and this is a man who is approaching me), so this also feels slightly worrisome from a personal safety standpoint--he knows who I am, where I work and what car I drive.
Any advice appreciated!
