Taking Adoption Agency To Court
Hello,
I'm hoping the family law tag is the correct one here. Apologies if it isn't.
Location: Wisconsin
I'm considering taking the agency that handled my adoption to court over the falsification of my documents and willful destruction of property.
I was adopted at 2 weeks old through a large religious "charity" organization in 1998. My adoption was supposed to be semi-open, all paperwork that my birth mom and adoptive parents have indicate such. With this arrangement, my mother and I were supposed to be allowed contact via mail and digital means before my 18th birthday, and all mail was to be sent to the agency for them to forward in order to keep my and her addresses hidden.
Upon meeting my birth mother, I asked if she had liked the birthday and christmas gifts I had sent her over the years, and she indicated to me that she had not received any after 2003. That's when anything from her stopped coming as well. It turns out that, between the years of 2003 and 2014 not a single letter or package had been forwarded by the agency.
When I called them to ask about this, the woman on the other end nonchalantly replied that they had thrown a lot away when they moved offices, so it must have been among that.
Thousands of dollars in postage, presents, and printed photos were discarded without informing anyone involved.
Recently, upon requesting information about my adoption, I was informed over the phone that it was filed as a CLOSED adoption. Which it was not. Neither my birth mother nor my adoptive parents signed closed adoption paperwork. My mother, as an adoptee herself, adamantly refused closed adoption as an option. I am trying to get a copy of the paperwork they have sent to me as proof that they forged information and signatures onto illegitimate paperwork regarding my adoption.
I'm unsure if I would go through family law for this or something else? Or what my next steps should be in this, as I'm certain I'm not the only one they've done this to. The company has MANY individual suits in their history for things like not notifying the birth father of an adoption.. so I'm hoping that I can hold them accountable with this as well.
