Tenant In Failing Health
Location: Alabama
Not sure if I need legal advice or life advice but here goes:
My wife and I have owned a home in Alabama for the past 14 years and during that time we have rented out the Mother in Law suite to the same individual for that entire time period. He is now about 70 years old and since COVID his health has declined precipitously and last year he fractured a disk in his back which has basically limited his mobility by about 90 - 95%. We still own the house but have moved to another location so I do not have regular contact with him however on the last check up, it seems like it's becoming a hoarding situation where he can't really move around to throw out trash or bathe or have access to the bathroom, etc. He is just stuck sitting in a recliner.
It's clear he needs to be in an assisted living facility but I have no legal connection to him and as far as I know he is estranged from his wife and children. I do have his sister's phone number but she lives in New York and can't really take an active role in his care.
As far as I know, he is just living off Social Security so there aren't a lot of options for him. I'm not looking to evict him but I also don't want him to die in the apartment in a filthy condition.
So my question is what options do I have to deal with this situation?
