Tennessee Revoked My License For A Year Under An Injury Statute, But No One Was Injured. What Can I Do? (19f)

Hi everyone. I’m looking for some advice because I’m really confused about my situation.

At the beginning of February, I was involved in a car accident. I panicked and left the scene at first, but I immediately called 911, explained what happened, and returned to meet with the other driver. Thankfully, no one was injured. It was strictly a property damage accident.

When the officer arrived, he scolded me and insisted that I apologize to the older woman I hit, which felt strange and unprofessional. He also told me I would have to appear in court and gave me a court date.

I’ve since gone to court twice, paid all of my court fees, and thought everything had been resolved. Then, about a week ago, I received a letter saying my driver’s license was being revoked for an entire year. I was shocked by this.

My dad and I called the Tennessee Department of Safety to find out why. They told us the revocation is based on Tennessee Code 55-50-501 for “failure to stop and render aid” in an accident involving death or personal injury. The problem is that no one was injured or killed.

We explained that both the police report and the insurance claim show there were no injuries, but they said I still don’t qualify for a restricted license because of how the officer wrote the citation. Our insurance company has also confirmed that the other driver was not injured.

I’m a college student, and losing my license for a year is going to make life extremely difficult since I’m remote.

Is there any way to challenge the revocation or get it corrected if the citation appears to classify the accident incorrectly? We have a lawyer, but we haven’t been able to get in touch with him lately, so I’m hoping to hear if anyone has experience with this.
