Texas: Ex Roommate Asking Me For Money 3 Months Later…
Location: Texas.
My former roommate and I each paid $500 toward a $1,000 security deposit. When our lease ended, the landlord refunded $500 to me.
It’s now been about three months since the lease ended, and this is the first time she’s asked me for any of the deposit. She’s now demanding that I send her $300.
The property manager told me they charged for damage to the walls in her room. She also left belongings behind after moving out, and I texted her asking when she was coming back to finish cleaning, but she never did. I ended up dealing with the remaining cleaning and the items she left.
She argues that any pet cleaning should come out of my portion because I had a dog, but the property manager never told me there were any pet-related charges, and the apartment has the carpets cleaned between tenants anyway.
She’s now repeatedly messaging me, demanding money, threatening to sue me, and I feel like she’s harassing me over this.
Could she successfully sue me in Texas, or is this something she would need to address with the landlord? Does the fact that the refund check was issued to me change anything legally? Does it matter that she waited about three months before bringing this up? Also, at what point do repeated demands and threats over this become harassment, if at all?
